About This Activity
There are a few key dates on the annual calendar when fire prevention is heavily promoted to the public in Oregon. Wildfire Awareness Month takes place during May, just as campgrounds start to open to the public. Fire Prevention Month is another opportunity to reach the masses during October.
This activity encourages students to research a fire cause, identify the target audience that is most responsible for the source of fire, and then create engaging content (a product or handout) to teach the target audience to help stop fires before they start. For example, visit a local campground and talk with campers about campfire safety. The students pictured here worked with a local campground and home improvement center to secure donated buckets. They put fire prevention labels on the buckets and distributed these ‘fire extinguishers’ throughout the campground, near water sources, to remind campers that they need to fully extinguish their campfires. The possibilities are endless!
